The ABC's of Helping Kids Prepare for Back-to-School Season

As summer comes to a close, our team at Amplified Life Counseling & Coaching here in Byron Center knows many families are gearing up for the return to school. Whether your child is excited, nervous, or somewhere in between, this transition can be a big deal. We’re here to help! As a local, trusted, provider of child counseling services for Byron Center Schools and other area schools we want to share some practical ways you can support your child’s mental and emotional health this season.

A: Acknowledge Their Feelings

Start with a conversation. Ask your child how they’re feeling about heading back to school. Are they excited to see friends? Worried about new teachers or routines? Let them know whatever they’re feeling is okay. Sometimes just being heard can ease a child’s worries. For kids who have trouble opening up, drawing or playing can give them another way to share what’s on their mind.

When you acknowledge their emotions—without trying to fix them right away—you build trust and help your child feel safe.

B: Build Predictable Routines

Kids do best when they know what to expect. As school approaches, try to get back into a regular sleep and meal schedule. Practice morning and evening routines together. Maybe set up a special spot for backpacks and homework. Even small, predictable rituals—like a family breakfast or after-school snack—can go a long way toward helping kids feel secure.

Visual schedules or checklists can help younger children, while older kids may appreciate being part of the planning process.

C: Coach Coping Skills

New school years come with new challenges—socially, emotionally, and academically. Practice some simple coping skills together: deep breathing, positive self-talk, or coming up with a list of people they can turn to for help at school. Role-play tricky situations, like joining a new group at recess or asking a teacher for help.

And remember, kids are always watching! When you handle your own stress calmly, you’re teaching them resilience by example.

We're Here For You

Transitions can be tough, but you don’t have to navigate them alone. If you notice your child is struggling more than usual with school worries, reach out to us at Amplified Life Counseling & Coaching. Our team is here to support your family with proven tools and compassion, every step of the way.

Let’s make this school year a positive, healthy one—together!
